Session 5 – Bio-inspired materials and circular economy – the resource revolution?
Upon observation of evolution as a whole, it is clear that nature is the most experienced designer and engineer. The principles and mechanisms behind naturally evolved designs and optimization strategies are still being assessed for future products and production methods. Does it make sense to follow these principles?
Addressing a number of challenges of society, global plastic production has been exploding over the last decades. At the same time its production and usage harms the environment in a very critical manner. Which methods and technologies will lead us to a new plastic economy? Is the substitution of products based on fossil resources by bio-based materials a step towards sustainability and is a stable industrial metabolism without fossil resources desirable?
